WordCamp Kathmandu 2018

Two weeks ago, I had an amazing chance to join a warm and friendly WordPress community at WordCamp Kathmandu 2018.

My talk was about the benefits and considerations when having a multilingual WordPress site. The organizers gave me 25 minutes, which was pretty short, I expected to have at least 10 minutes more. I could not talk something at the end of my talk, you can jump here to see the rest.

The WordCamp was bigger than what I had expected, around 350 people in total with two rooms.

One of my favorite things is that the talks were not just WordPress, but also soft skills, people management, and a success story. The success story was interesting however the speakers talked in English and Nepali at the same time, which gave me a big headache in following the story.

Pre and after event parties were nice as well with a lot of choices for food.

Don’t think the multilingual feature will be in the core, at least for the short-term. Not many WordPress sites need a multilingual feature in general, just 3 or 4 percent. Maybe this will change in the future. What the core team can do in the foreseeable future is to provide more hooks.

Plugin choices: 

• Go with Bogo and Polylang for simple sites, just content like posts and pages. Go WPML for complicated sites.
• Polylang – I see it the potential and possibly game changer in the future. But at the moment WPML still the best one in general.
• Weglot is interesting but pricey. The free version of Weglot is even not enough for fresh new sites! It offers 2000 free words while a fresh site has over 2800 words. Although, I still think it may have the bright future.
• Interesting point: both Weglot and Polylang are created by French.
